Every quarter, cards like Chase Freedom and Discover it offer 5% back on a fresh set of categories — groceries one quarter, gas stations the next. It is some of the highest earning you can get without an annual fee.
The catch is that the 5% is never automatic. You must activate it each quarter, and the bonus applies only to the first $1,500 you spend in those categories. Spend $1,501 and everything after earns the base 1%.
So the play is simple: activate on day one, then route all of that quarter's category spending to the card until you hit the cap. A shared family grocery run is the fastest way to max it out — $1,500 at 5% is $75 back per quarter, $300 a year.
Watch the exclusions. The classic trap is "grocery stores excluding Walmart and Target" — warehouse clubs and superstores often do not count. When in doubt, buy a small test item first and check how it codes.
See how SwipeWise tracks quarterly activations so you never miss an activation window again. The deadline is usually mid-quarter — miss it and the 5% is gone for good.
